A positive displacement pump moves fluid by repeatedly enclosing a defined volume and mechanically displacing it through the system. The pumping action can be rotary, reciprocating or diaphragm-driven, with different pump technologies using pistons, gears, screws, rollers, diaphragms or vanes to move the fluid.
Unlike centrifugal pumps, positive displacement pumps are designed to move a defined volume of fluid with each pumping cycle. This makes them suitable for applications where controlled flow, higher pressures or the handling of more viscous fluids are required.
